Feasibility study & roadmap

Know whether it works and what it costs before you invest

You have an idea for a smart or connected product, and customers or investors are interested. But can the measuring principle work, which technology fits, and what does it cost per device? We find that out before you put months into development.

Sound familiar?

  • You know what you want to measure or detect, but not whether or how it can be done technically
  • Several technologies could work, and you want to compare them fairly
  • Investors or management are asking for a well-founded roadmap and a cost estimate
  • You are torn between 4G, NB-IoT, LoRa or something else, and between battery, solar or mains power
  • You don't want to find out after six months of development that it doesn't work

A menu of modules

Each module answers a concrete question. The kickoff is always the starting point; you choose the other modules yourself, so the study fits your question and your budget.

A

Kickoff and requirements

A workshop with your team: what exactly should the system do, under which conditions, and which rules and constraints apply?

Outcome: a shared, written definition of what the system must be able to do.

B

Technology scan

A longlist of possible sensor technologies and alternative data sources, rated on coverage, power consumption, robustness, false alarms and maturity. Summarized in a trade-off matrix.

Outcome: a shortlist of promising technologies.

C

Measuring principle and validation plan

Literature and prior-art research, and an assessment of whether the measuring principle can work in practice. Plus a test plan: which measurement proves it, and what does it cost?

Outcome: knowing whether the idea is plausible, and how to demonstrate that.

D

System architecture

Options for communication (such as 4G, NB-IoT or LoRa) and power (battery, solar, mains), matched to the environment your devices will be installed in.

Outcome: what a device and network realistically look like, and where the risks are.

E

Cost model

Hardware, installation, connectivity and maintenance, per device or per site, for each architecture option.

Outcome: the number for your conversations with investors and customers.

F

Report, roadmap and presentation

All modules brought together in one report, with a go/no-go recommendation, a development roadmap and a concrete proposal for the next step.

Outcome: a document you can put in front of investors and customers.

A feasibility study is research and calculation. We don't build hardware yet. Measurements and a pilot come later, as a separate next step, once you get there.

What you get

  • A well-founded go/no-go per concept
  • Trade-off matrix and shortlist of technologies
  • Architecture options with a cost indication
  • A validation or pilot plan as a concrete next step
  • A development roadmap and a final presentation with your team

What does it cost?

You choose which modules you need. The kickoff is the fixed starting point.

Kickoff and requirementsfrom €960
Complete study (all modules)about €9,600
Lead time for the complete study3 to 4 weeks

Indicative and excluding VAT. You receive a tailored proposal in advance with a fixed price per module.

A study by the people who build it afterwards

We have been developing connected equipment ourselves for years, from Frogwatch to BTB Energy's solar water heater. So our advice isn't theoretical: we know how much power a 4G modem uses, what an installation in the field costs and where things go wrong in practice. And if you decide to build afterwards, the foundation is already in place with our sensor-link building blocks.

Frequently asked questions about the feasibility study

What is a feasibility study for a connected product?
Research and calculations before you start development. We find out whether your measuring principle can work, which technology fits and what it costs per device or per site. You get a go/no-go with the reasoning behind it, a development roadmap and a concrete proposal for the next step. We don't build hardware in this phase.
What does a feasibility study cost?
The study is made up of modules and you choose the ones you need. The kickoff, where we define the requirements together, is always the starting point and costs from €960. A complete study with all modules costs about €9,600. Prices are indicative and exclude VAT; you get a proposal with a fixed price per module up front.
How long does a feasibility study take?
A complete study with all modules takes 3 to 4 weeks. If you choose fewer modules, it takes less time.
Which connection suits my device: 4G, NB-IoT or LoRa?
That depends on where your devices will be installed and how they are powered: battery, solar or mains. In the system architecture module we compare the options side by side, with the risks and the cost per device or per site.
What happens after the feasibility study?
Measurements or a pilot follow as a separate next step. If you decide to build, the foundation is ready in our sensor-link building blocks, and the same people who did the study develop your product.
