Will this method work? Which way works the best? How wel does the new prototype perform? Or what is the reason your design or prototype does not work? These kind of questions require specific measurements to answer them.
Often it is faster and lower risk to build a small simulation or test setup instead of building the entire product. A special test setup is also useful if you need to redo some tests in a later stage, since it will be easy to have reproducible experiments.
Just measuring data is never enough. You still need to do something with it. At the very least it needs to be saved or logged. This way it can be processed and analysed later. Sometimes you want to process and visualize the data in real time. This allows tweaking the experiment on the fly. Other times you want to log data automatically overnight or at certain intervals.
